How Do You Build a Solid Machine Foundation on the Edge of a Volcano?

Employing a unique construction process, Delta Industrial took on Mother Nature...and won.

We designed and built a foundation for a Linx machining center for A & G Machine Incorporated, a supplier of sophisticated high tech parts to the aviation industry.
Located in Auburn, Washington, the plant where we were tasked to build the foundation was located in an old riverbed, near potential volcanic activity.   Undaunted, our skilled engineers designed a substructure that could withstand a natural disaster and prevent any shifting of the machinery.
Another wrinkle we had to overcome was the machinery on top of our machine foundation produces precision parts with extremely tight tolerances — as small as ten thousandths of an inch. So, the machine’s foundation needed to be 100% solid and ultra-stable to maintain the necessary integrity.

Meeting the Challenge for an Ultra-Stable Machine Foundation

To do this right our team had to strategically reinforce the base with helical pilings. Instead of pouring the concrete in multiple stages, we used an innovative monolithic pour to construct the five-foot thick reinforced concrete that made up the machine’s foundation.

Increased Construction Efficiencies = Happy Customer & Leads to More Construction Projects

By doing this we were able to enhance the construction efficiencies and increase the structural strength of the base. This project, with conveyor system, was completed in only 14 weeks.
The telltale sign that A & G Machine and Linx were happy with the results were the additional projects they then asked us to do. Linx also listed Delta as a preferred supplier of foundations for their machining centers.

About Us

We’re proud to be recognized as the Midwest’s leader in machine foundations, press pits and industrial concrete construction. We do complete construction across the U.S. from three offices - our headquarters in Chesterfield, Michigan; Trussville Alabama; and Fort Thomas Kentucky. We’re a family-owned complete construction company with our own steel fabrication shop founded in 1993, specializing in machine and press foundations, concrete flat work and steel fabrication. Our goal is an aesthetic and complete work product – On Time and On Budget.

Another Complete Construction Job By Our Machine Foundations Design-Build Team - on Time & in Budget

Many of you know us as press pit and machine foundation design experts. After more than 30 years building pits and designing machine foundations for Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers like metal stamping and machining mills we’d like to think we’ve learned a thing or two as well.

But as we’ve grown and expanded our focus has become meeting all of your industrial construction needs – from the first blue print all the way to a completed and aesthetic construction project.

A while back we had the pleasure of expanding outside of our regular automotive clientele – well sort of.
machine foundation design

The job was to construct a 220,000+ square foot manufacturing plant for Titan Tire, a subsidiary of Titan International, Inc. The new plant was needed to produce a super-giant 63-inch steel belted radial tire for use on agricultural, earth moving, and construction vehicles. Testing performed by Titan on the new tire indicated that tire life could be extended by 20 to 30 percent over conventional tires.

After our machine foundation design team had finished the design, our build team got to work on the massive construction project by installing concrete building column footings and the exterior wall-column base plates.

Then the crew got started on the critical second phase of the operation by designing, building and placing more than 30 different foundations for the new plant. The various foundations ranged in depth from a shallow 12-inches all the way to 30-foot excavations.  The different foundations were needed to accommodate a diverse variety of heavy and complex equipment used in Titan’s manufacturing processes.

With Tom Lytle as Project Manager the job was completed on time and in budget.  It was a unique opportunity for us to really showcase our breadth of designing and building capabilities outside of our typical zone we’ve gained a reputation for.

Whether flatwork, machine foundations, steel construction, or complete construction jobs like we did for Titan, our goal is always to create an aesthetic and complete work product that stays within your budget and timeline.  With our three locations, here in Michigan and Kentucky and Alabama we can literally do any job from the northern Midwest to the Gulf Coast.

We’d love to get to know you at IMTS 2014

We’ll be headed to the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in just a few days and we’re looking forward to a great conference.

This year’s show runs September 8-13 in Chicago.  According to the folks at IMTS there will be over 2,000 vendors at the show and more than 100,000 people coming from over 100 countries.

machine foundations designWe do trade shows like these for lots of reasons.  Like all the vendors we know there will be many decision makers either making, or preparing to make, purchase decisions for next year. With American manufacturing expanding like it is, many buyers from machining mills, plastic injection molding and metal stamping will be adding new machines.  Which of course means they will need new machine foundations design. That is certainly a good enough reason for us to be at the biggest manufacturing show in the U.S.

But, another, maybe even more important reason, is that we actually like to meet face-to-face with our customers and find out who they are and their exact construction problems and needs.  As a family-owned company we know that no matter how big the company we serve, our real customers are the people in that company.

IMTS is one way to strengthen our ability to really get to know and serve you. Over the last three decades we’ve established a reputation for construction innovation and really helping you solve all your construction problems with as a consolidated construction source.

We’ve always expanded our construction capabilities as a direct result of what we hear from you. We want to be your first source for all your construction needs. Our in-house Design-Build engineers have decades of experience. A few years ago we added The Steel Shop so we’d have full service steel fabrication and steel construction arm.

Besides machine foundations designing and building, we develop entire projects from blueprint to full, on-time completion. We do everything from parking lots to million-square foot manufacturing plants and almost anything in between.

Whatever your expansion and construction plans for this year and 2015 come by and see how we could meet your needs. If we’ve done work for you or your company and you’re happy with the job we did, come by and let us know that too.  It’s things like that that make it all worthwhile.

We look forward to you or some of your people meeting some of our great people at booth N-7097 in the Fabricating/Laser/Additive Pavilion in the North Building.  See you at IMTS 2014.

Press Pit Redesign for 10,000,000 lb. Press Cuts Time & Cost in Half

Delta’s in-house engineering team delivers slashed cost & job timeline for TFO Tech
When Ohio automotive parts manufacturer, TFO Tech, Ltd. needed a second opinion on design plans for their Kurimoto Forging press pit they called us. Our engineering team analyzed the whole design for the press foundation, accessory press pits for scrap metal conveyors and electrical and mechanical lines.

We saw where changes were needed and quickly altered the originals to our new specs.  Designing and building a foundation that holds a 10 million pound press is no small task, but we’ve been doing it for more than three decades and we bring that experience into every job we do.

With our re-design we eliminated unnecessary accessory press pits and slashed the overall build cost in half. When we cut out the extraneous pieces from the original design the job could be completed twice as fast.

We knew TFO’s operations run 24/7 and any downtime costs money, so making the compressed timelines work was a top priority. When we found out we could beat them, we knew we were potentially saving them millions of dollars in lost production plus the reduction in overall build cost. We love over delivering.

Because this project was located only about 350 miles from the New Madrid fault we had to make sure our cranes for the new 24-foot deep press pit excavation would be earthquake-proof, so we also installed supports at their base to prevent any moving or shifting during the build. With a recent 4.0 quake in eastern Kentucky sending tremors as far as Cincinnati and Atlanta, the precaution was justified, even in the Midwest.

In a short amount of time, the press was set into place and the best part – when the build and installation were done - NO adjustments were required. Another win for our team and the customer, just what we were going for.

What Does a Chemical Company Located Next to a Residential Area Do When They Need a New Foundation Pit for their Tank Farm? You Won’t Believe What One Company Did.

The scene is Ferndale, Michigan, a Detroit suburb that like many towns in the area has a mix of industrial and residential – often side by side. In areas like this, the challenge is how to sustainably combine neighborhoods and families alongside the businesses and employers that keep the community prosperous and growing.
Gage Products Company has been a strong supporter of the community for three generations. As a family-owned chemical solvent manufacturer and recycler for the auto industry their commitment to the environment and the people in Ferndale has been an integral part of their mission since the 1980s.
To ensure their systems and tank containment facilities would continue their environmental stewardship they needed a new foundation pit for their solvent tank farm.
The Delta Industrial team was called in to design and build the new foundation pit and containment wall for 14 large storage tanks located at the company headquarters. We were also asked to build a new loading dock.
Ordinary solutions are just not good enough
Our task was to create the best solution to prevent deterioration or contamination in the event of a spill or leak.  The “ordinary solution” is to use a rubber liner under the base of the tank farm – unfortunately “ordinary” is not good enough for our customers or us.
The Delta engineering team set to work creating an extra-ordinary solution that utilized eight percent silica concrete mix – double the Michigan Department of Transportation requirements in building bridge decks. This engineered concrete process greatly strengthened both the containment wall and the foundation pit slab itself.
Whenever possible – Over Deliver
Our focus on extra-ordinary didn’t end there, since our stronger and better process for the tank farm foundation pit also shortened the build time by several weeks and reduced construction costs. Another win-win for our customer and another industrial construction job done – On Time and In Budget.
As a result Gage Products Company now has a viable, long-term solution that guarantees the safety of the neighborhood they live and work in and supports their mission of environmental sustainability at the same time.

Why Choosing the Right Machine Foundation Contractor Saves Money

We all know that every minute a shearing machine or stamping press is down is lost production and that means lost money. But if the machine’s foundation is deteriorating, waiting to get it replaced can cost even more.
Faced with that exact scenario, Delaco Steel Corporation had a crop-shear press on a crumbling, unsafe machine foundation and no time (or money) to lose.
When they came to us we were told that we’d have exactly 48 hours for demolition of the old foundation, building the new structure, pouring the new concrete and getting the crop-shear press fully back on the machine’s new foundation.
For other construction companies a timeline like that could be mission impossible. For us, at Delta it was a challenge we were and are fully equipped for.
Our in-house design team immediately went to work creating the plans and handling all aspects of the complete construction job to meet or beat that deadline.
When the Delta crew showed up on Thursday afternoon at 3:00pm there was no time to waste. The timeline they were working on meant the old press pit demolition, new construction and pour needed to be finished within 12 hours or the concrete wouldn’t be ready to install the press.
By 3:00am the machine foundation was poured and all the other construction targets were in perfect alignment for the team to get the shear-press fully operational and back online by Saturday afternoon, which is exactly what they did. Another structurally sound, aesthetic and fully complete product of work.
The best thing about this job was Delaco was so happy with the speed and quality they hired us to design three more press pit foundations at two other locations.  Of course, we completed those jobs on time and within budget too.

If you need a machine foundation, press pit or any industrial construction job please visit our RFQ page and tell us about our needs. When you choose Delta we guarantee you will be satisfied and your job will be done on time and on budget.
